About each to know whether it is worth visiting and how much time a visit will require. Among the ruins not found in other guides are the spectacular and recently discovered Balamku and the lovely Sacbe (the location of which was lost for many years). Such famous tourist attractions as Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Tulum, and Labna are described in loving detail, as are all the sites. The sites and museums are rated from 0 to 4 stars so that readers will know at a glance how.
The pre-Hispanic architecture of the Yucatan Peninsula is among
the most remarkable in the world, and this book should be in the hands
of everyone who intends to visit Mayan ruins such as Chichen Itza,
Tulum, or Uxmal. It supersedes the author's own Complete Guide to
Mesoamerican Ruins ( LJ 8/81) and once again shows her talent for
guidebook writing. Kelly personally visited nearly every one of the 99
sites and museums described in the guide. She knows what a tourist wants
to know. Each site is rated by importance in a four-star system. Site
descriptions contain a detailed summary of the ruins, recent history of
the site, and travel directions. Area road maps and site plans where
available complete the package. What is wonderful about this book is
that one doesn't have to be planning a trip to enjoy it. It should be in
all libraries.
